DFP Presents…

Transforming Perspectives Gallery

"We are working to further the meaning of Family photography and even the definition of ‘family’. family should be all-encompassing and inclusive beyond the typical idea of a mom, a dad and a couple of kids because that isn't the only thing which defines family. A family is a same-sex couple with or without kids. It is a singleton with their pet. It is someone who doesn't have contact with their blood relatives anymore and so they have created their own little family unit with some of their best friends. Or perhaps it is a community of friends or work partners who are like a family. Family can be a variety of things. Family to us simply means sharing some portion of life with the ones you love, sharing laughter, sadness, tragedy, victory, loss, regret, happiness, and success."

DFP continuously strives to grow its space in order to amplify, support, and celebrate the diverse range of photographers in the Documentary Family Photography Community and the important work they are doing.

With DFP’s mission of “Transforming Perspectives”, it felt fitting to have a gallery of the same name, representative of the work from documentary family photographers in the DFP community. Transforming Perspectives Gallery serves as an online space for DFP to create virtual exhibitions, with the intention of expanding to a worldwide, in-person, traveling exhibit (once it is safer to do so).

Transforming Perspectives Gallery gives photographers the chance to get their work in front of more people, to gain recognition from around the world, and to contribute their photographic voice as a means of communicating the importance of true family stories.

With this in mind, DFP is determined to champion the definition of family to be more inclusive by showing imagery not only of family dynamics that we have grown used to seeing but also those that include: Same-sex couples, people without kids, adopted families, community as family, extended family, etc., in addition to what we are used to seeing. In this modern world, it is important to express a dynamic range of ideas, and photography is a medium that allows us to do that, while making an impact on things such as family definition, with our imagery.

About the exhibits

Group Exhibitions

Selected photographers will have the chance to show their work in a collective exhibit. Group exhibits will take place at least 2x per year, starting with online virtual exhibits, and eventually including in-person gallery exhibits as well.

During each exhibition opening, Transforming Perspectives Gallery will host an opening reception where photographers selected for the exhibition will talk about the stories behind their imagery and about some of their other work so we can get to know them better.

Solo Exhibitions

DFP Members will also have the chance for solo exhibits throughout the year. This will give individual photographers a chance to showcase their projects and work in order to reach a wider audience.

Curation / Juries

Each group exhibition will be curated by a single juror or a panel of jurors. Information for each exhibition and curation process is unique and can be found in that particular exhibition’s “Open Call” when it becomes available.

Community Choice Award

Gallery visitors will be able to cast their vote for their favorite image(s) from the exhibit. The image(s) with the most votes will be awarded the “People’s Choice Award”, which includes a badge, publication, features across DFP’s social media platforms, and prizes from our sponsors.

Publication

The selected works will be included in the Transforming Perspectives exhibition zine publication as well as featured online and across various platforms.

Print Sale

Photographers selected for the exhibit have the opportunity to sell their image(s) through the gallery if they choose.
