Transforming Perspectives
In this modern world, it is important to express a dynamic range of ideas, and photography is a medium that allows us to do that while making an impact on things such as family definition with our imagery as well as igniting viewers’ emotions through true family stories.
We are seeking imagery by photographers who are striving to portray the true stories & experiences of families with all different backgrounds, cultures, dynamics, and lifestyles. Our aim is to transform the perspectives of the world and how it views family life, and how family photography can look.
The theme is broadly construed which allows photographers to interpret the theme as they see fit, and pushes them to decide what it means to transform perspectives through documentary family photography. It can be the messiness of everyday family life, the silliness, the simplicity vs chaos, the blending of families, the connections shared, the tears shed, the bringing of new life into the world, and so much more.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I have to be a DFP Directory Listed member photographer in order to submit?
A: No. Submissions are open for all who would like to apply.
Q: Why is there a submission fee & What is it used for?
A. The submission fee helps DFP to compensate the juror who will be going through all of the submissions and also enables DFP to put on this exhibition by helping fund a small portion of the costs associated with it.
Submission fee waivers are available on a case-by-case basis for photographers without access to credit cards or for whom the entry fee would be prohibitive. To be considered for the scholarship, please contact us at hello@dfpeducation.com
Q: The details of the theme of the Exhibition “Transforming Perspectives” states you want to include diversity and a more open-minded definition of the term “family”. What if I only have images of the types of families we are used to seeing (i.e. Mom with her 2 kids) when the word family is used?
A: Our aim is to transform the perspectives of the world and how it views family life, and how family photography can look. This includes not only diverse and open-minded views of what makes a family but also includes showing work of family dynamics we are used to seeing when we hear the word family. The main criteria are that images were made with a documentary approach and any direction given (because it is a portrait, for example), is clearly stated on the submission form in the image caption.
Q: What happens if my work is selected for the exhibit?
A: Photographers will be notified that their work has been selected by March 22, 2021. At that time, we may request high-resolution files, a bio, and any other information we need in order to include your work in the exhibition. You will also be asked if you would like to sell prints of your image and will be informed of any Terms & Conditions regarding print sales.
Q: If my work is selected for the exhibit, can I sell prints? Do I have to sell prints?
A: Yes, you can sell prints. No, including your image in the print sale is optional.
Q: In your terms & conditions it mentions “irrevocable, royalty-free rights” for the exhibition catalogue and a possible book in the future. What’s up with that?
A: By submitting to the exhibition, if your work is selected, you grant DFP non-exclusive rights to exhibit your image, to use it in materials relating to the exhibit, including the exhibition catalogue. Exhibition catalogues are customary and some exhibits/festivals/galleries/awards at some point do a best of book or yearbook of sorts.
At the moment DFP has no plans for a book, however we will do an exhibition catalogue and the photographers whose work is in the exhibit will receive a complimentary catalogue mailed directly to them.
If we do at some point plan to publish a book, it would be collaborative with the photographers and we would definitely let you all know ahead of time.
Q. I am nervous to submit. I am not sure if my work measures up.
A: We encourage you to submit for the experience. DFP is a safe place to submit images and to know, even if your work is not selected, we are still proud of you for stepping into the light and taking up space.
